An Amachi Poem…
I am a mentor–not young, old, white, black, wealthy, or poor
yet all of these.
I have received help and kindness.
I have depended on others.
I have needed relationships
to help me grow.
Now I show up for the child who needs me,
which is another way of showing up for myself.
The kids say, “the best breakfast I ever ate,”
“Can we build a helicopter?”
“How do you recycle?”
Their eyes get big over a hot ham and cheese sandwich.
They ride a horse, build a fairy garden, make cookies,
play basketball, get ice cream, watch a movie,
go to the park, visit the library, do pottery, plant flowers,
make slime, build, crochet, bake, talk, eat out!
It’s match magic.
I am a mentor.
My mentee and I make match magic happen.
